Week 28 (April 11-14)

In Literacy this week, our focus was on identifying the elements of narrative stories.  The grade 3's were given a graphic organizer that contained all the elements of a story, main character, setting, problem, solution and ending.  We read many different picture books and filled out the graphic organizer by picking out the story elements.  In our reading power lessons, we continued to focus on asking and thinking about 'Deep thinking' questions as we read to help us think more while we are reading.  In word work, we continued our work with the prefixes re, un, dis and in.

In math this week, we continued with our focus on geometry.  This week we learned many new terms, polygons, regular and irregular, the names of 7, 8, and 9 sides shapes and angels.  We learned that angles are on the inside of a shape, where 2 sides meet.  We learned what right angles were, and that angels can be larger and smaller than a right angle.  We also used our visual and spacial skills, figuring out as many different ways to see 15 dots, by writing equations to show our thinking.

In Science this week, we learned about the 5 main types of bridges and the 5 forces that act upon those structures.  Then we learned about design thinking and sketched a bridge that could help transport tourists across a river and desert to 'the lost city'.  The grade 3's then began gathering materials from our maker space to start building their prototype of their bridge.  Thank-you so much to those parents who saved building supplies and brought them to school!

In gym this week, we continued our gymnastics unit.  The grade 3's did an amazing job learning how to use a trestle safety.  They also worked really well creating routines containing different types of travels, balances and shapes.  It was amazing to see the creative move's room 6 came up with and how several students overcame their fears and tried something new and challenging.
