In literacy this week, we focused on writing good sentences with proper conjunctions, such as before, after and when.  We read and listened to various mentor texts to write about, including a wonderful book called 'All are Welcome'.  We also focused on the 'au', 'aw' , 'oi' and 'oy' spelling patterns.  We spelled many words using these patterns, added them to our sound wall, and completed a word sort with our partners on Friday. In math this week, we explored how addition and subtraction are related and how we can use reverse operations to check our work.  We also worked on solving some word problems and completed an assessment on our subtraction skills.  Look for addition and subtraction assessments to come home next week. In Science this week, we learned about how our ears hear sound energy and labelled parts of the ear in our visual journals.  Then we completed some experiments to illustrate how sound behaves.  For example, sound comes from a

Happy Short Week! This week in literacy, we talked about how to finish our descriptive writing with 'effective endings'.  We also created a checklist of all the parts we need in our writing for it to be complete, so we know when our writing is finished. The grade 2 & 3's worked hard to complete their good copy and a diagram about their animal.  In word work, we reviewed the vowel teams, ew, ui and ue that create the long u sounds in words. This week in math, we continued our focus on subtraction problems with regrouping.  We continued to look at different ways to regroup and spend lots of time practising how to solve them. In Science this week, we continued exploring sound energy, how it is transferred and produced by vibrations.  We did two different experiments, buzzing combs and hitting metal spoons again a desk to see if sounds can travel through solids.  We also worked on writing up our experiments, using the Scientific method. In gym this week, we did some dancin

Happy Winter Walk Week! We had a great time on Wednesday morning with our grade 6 buddies, walking in our 'winter wonderland' outside around the block. In literacy this week, we continued writing our descriptive paragraph about our animals.  Our focus this week was on varying our sentences starters by using 'fact facts starters'. We also talked about organizing our sentences to keep each big idea together.  In our word work, we learned about the two different sounds, 'oo' make and created a word chain linking the beginning, middle and ending sounds. In math this week, we continued our work with subtraction problems.  We focused on how to solve problems with regrouping the tens to make enough ones to subtract.  First, we used the base ten blocks, then we drew pictures to represent the regrouping using our place value mats, and then we used numbers to show our regrouping.  We also completed our addition quiz on Wednesday. In Science this week, we began our new un

In Literacy this week, we continued our work on writing non-fiction paragraphs.  This week, we learned how to 'hook' our reader with good beginnings and how to take our 'dash facts' we researched and put them into complete sentences.  In reading and our phonics work, we concluded our review of long vowel teams.  In math this week, we continued our work with addition and subtraction.  We played and solved some strategy games using a number line.  The game was called, STRIKE it out!  We also reviewed how to write a number in standard, expanded and base ten block form with the number of the day math routine. In Social Studies and art this week, we learned about the Taj Mahal and how it is important to the culture in India.  We talked about the beauty and wonder of this building.  We also talked about the line of Symmetry and how the Taj Mahal is a perfect example.  We used Miras to sketch the other half of the building. Looking Ahead to Next Week: 1. In Literacy, we will l
