In Literacy this week, we began our work with fairy tales and folk tales.  Together as a class, we read some of our favourite fairy tales and created a list of what story elements are in fairy tales and folk tales.  Then we talked about changing them or fracturing them.  Then we planned our own fractured fairy tale, changing one or two elements from the original story.  Some students chose to change the point of view of who is telling the story, others chose to change the characters or the setting.  On Friday, we began to draft our fractured fairy tales, starting with Once Upon a Time.....  We also learned about THE APOSTROPHE, and used it to make contractions. In math this week, we worked on measurement.  We talked about the metric system and how we can use millimeters, centimetres and meters to measure a variety of items.  We also measured different parts of our body and compared them to our partners.   In Social Studies this week, we continued our study with Ukraine.  This week, we

In math this week, we finished up our study of fractions.  We looked at how fractions like 1/2 are different sizes if the wholes are different.  We also compared and ordered fractions using a clothesline number line. The grade 3's also had their fraction quiz, and we went through it together on Friday, talking about some of the questions that gave them trouble. In gym this week, we brushed up on our soccer skills and playing some mini-games outside.  We reviewed how to dribble a ball, how to pass, and some cool soccer tricks that we learned from our classmates.  Looking Ahead to Next Week: 1.  In Literacy this week, room 6 worked on revising and publishing their first narrative story.  The grade 3's worked on typing up their stories and creating a title page to go with their stories.  They also worked together to create a rubric that we will use to mark their stories.  The grade 3's used the rubric we made together to do some self assessment of their own stories.  In our Reading Power lessons, we began looking at our 4th Reading Power of Inferring.  We learned the Inferring is using clues from the text or illustrations that the author has left out on purpose to get their audience to think while they are reading. In math this week, we continued to explore fractions.  This week, we focused on reading fractions, putting fractions on a number line and comparing fractions with the same denominators.  We created fractions strips by folding paper and created our own fractions strips to use next week as we explore comparing factions with different denominators.
