In Literacy this week, we began our research on 'Dash Facts'.  First, we compared 2 different types of writing to determine what is Fiction writing and what is non-fiction writing.  Then we learned how to pull only the important words or phrases from a passage of writing to collect information on a single topic.  Then we choose either an arctic animal or an animal from India to learn more about.  We used websites and videos to collect information and facts about our animals.  We also reviewed the vowel teams that make the long e sound and the long o sound during our word work. In math this week, we focused on subtraction.  First, we created a Fraye model to review the vocabulary and symbols associated with subtraction.  Then we worked in our levelled groups to solve various subtraction problems using base ten blocks or number lines. In literacy this week, we focused on identifying and recognizing the differences between fiction and non-fiction books.  We explored and did a scavenger hunt around our classroom and with partners to find which books fit into each category.  Then on Thursday, we began looking at the different text features in non-fiction books.  We looked through a collection of on-fiction books and searched for all the different types of text features, such as, a table of contents, glossary and index. In math this week, we continued working on our addition and subtraction strategies. We worked with partners to prove why and how different strategies are useful when solving addition problems.  We also continued working on addition of 2 or 3 digit questions with regrouping.  The grade 2 & 3's have done a great job 'regrouping' when there is a group of ten. In gym this week, we concluded our work with floor hockey and stick skills by playing mini-games with our classmates.  We talked a lot

We looked at end punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks.  Then we explored apostrophes and how we use them in contractions and to make nouns plural.  Then on Thursday, we looked at commas and how we can use them to make lists and separate our ideas in a sentence.  On Friday, we did a free write about winter and tried to use as many punctuation marks as we could. In math this week, our focus was addition.  We reviewed what addition means, the vocabulary we use in addition questions, such as sum, adding, altogether and total, and then we practised adding with blocks.  Then we moved onto regrouping when we add.  Our grade 2's focused on adding 2-digit numbers and our grade 3's focused on adding 3-digit numbers.  We also reviewed place value and worked on our mental math addition strategies through a math talk.
