Week 40 (June 16-20)

In Literacy this week, we finished our Duck Diaries with a final entry about the ducklings heading off to the farm.  Then we wrote a review and reflection about our field trip to Fish Creek park on Wednesday.  We continue to read independently each day, focusing on the skills we learned in our small reading groups.  Please remember to read over the summer holiday as well, Check out the Ultimate Summer Reading Program  https://www.calgarylibrary.ca/events-and-programs/ultimate-summer-challenge



In math this week, we continued looking at time.  We focused on learning how an analog clock tells time and how it compared to a digital clock.  Next, we looked at how to relate seconds to minutes and minutes to hours.  We also built our own clocks, learning about how a clock is split in half and then quarters.



In Social studies, we continued to look at the culture in Ukraine.  We focused on looking at traditional food in Ukraine and art work on the flower of Ukraine, the sunflower.



In gym we attempted some compound games outside, hop scotch and teatherball.  Then we did some stations using various equipment in the gym.  




It was a faboulous day on Wednesday, learning from the land in Fish Creek park.  Many students were very curious about how much nature we saw.  They said, "we can't believe how fasinating nature is" and how evidence of life cycles were "everywhere in Fish Creek". 




On Friday, we learned about Sumer Solstice!! Learning froman Elder and planting some seeds outside in our school.  We created a visual journal page about what we learned and found important.

 In literacy this week, we continued working on our small-moment story.  We learned about adding sound effects, 'showing, not telling', using transition words and writing an effective ending.  In word work, we continued looking at vowel teams, this week we looked at the two different sounds oo make in words. In math this week, we continued with our different math groups.  On Monday, we will regroup our math groups again into grade groups.  This will allow the grade three's to continue with multiplication and division and the grade two's to focus on addition and subtraction skills. In Science this week, we continued exploring sound energy and forces.  The grade 2's learned how sound behaved and experimented with sound travelling through solids.  We also went outside to complete some sound mapping and observe the sounds we hear in nature and how we can tell what direction they are coming from. Week 34 (June 2-7)

 The Ducklings have arrived!! This week in literacy, we started our Duck Diaries on the computers.  We read several stories that we based our diaries on, The Diary of a fly, The Diary of a Worm and The Diary of a Spider, they are written from the perspective of an insect, just as our diaries are from the perspective of a duck.  The grade two's and threes have done a wonderful job writing about what it might be like being inside the egg and then what it would be like hatching. In math this week, we began our measurement unit.  We discussed all the different ways we can measure things and where we use measurement in our daily lives.  We learned that there are standard and non-standard units, and each can be used to measure length and width.   We used our rulers and measuring tapes to measure items in nature.  We also did some Smarties math, reviewing fractions and graphing.
