Week 15 (Dec 9 -13)

 This week in literacy, we continued reading and exploring Gingerbread stories.  This week we read The Gingerbread Cowboy and identified the different story elements using complete sentences.  Then we compared the 2 stories, using a Venn diagram, to see what was the same and different between the two stories. In Word Work this week, we focused on vowel teams that produce the long e sounds, /ea/, /ee/, and /ey/.  We spelled words with those patterns, built words, sorted words, and 'coded' them in text.





In math this week, we began looking at 2D and 3D shapes.  We looked at how you can tell them apart by looking at their attributes, faces, sides, and vertices.  We also did a scavenger hunt around the room to find different shapes in real life and some math talks about various shapes.





In Science, we continued learning about Energy.  This week, we learned that Energy is the ability to do work we also talked about different ways objects and people can move.  As well, we experimented with looking at sound vibrations for the grade 2's.



In Social Studies this week, we compared the climate and weather in India to the climate in Canada.  As well, the grade 2's compared the climate in an arctic community with the climate here in Calgary.  Then we talked about the clothing in each country and how climate affects the type of clothing worn by people who inhabit that country and community.



Looking Ahead to Next Week:

1. In Literacy, we will begin looking at writing our own version of a Gingerbread story.  In word work, we will work in putting words into alphabetical order.

2. In math, we will continue looking at geometric shapes, and how to sort them and build them.

3. In Science, we will begin looking at Sound and Kinetic Energy.

4. In Social Studies, we will continue looking at the clothing and landforms in India & the Arctic.

3. Winter Market

Our class with visit the Winter Market on Wednesday, December 18th.  Items are sold for $1 each with a max of $5.  We will gift wrap our gifts for family and friends in class.

We just wanted to let you know about some upcoming spirit days that we are having at EMJ to spread some joy and excitement during these last few weeks leading up to the winter break!

Thursday Dec 19th- Pajama Day 

Friday, Dec 20th- Anything Holiday/Winter Goes!- Dress in whatever winter or holiday garb you feel like to celebrate the last day before the break.

Week 24 (March 11-15)

 Happy Skipping Week!!  In literacy this week, we began work on persuasive writing.  We learned about the difference between an opinion and being persuasive.  We also learned about the structure of a persuasive piece, the what, why, why, why and what was that again.  We also brainstormed many different ideas and examples of how we can persuade our reader.  In word work, we focused on 'Bossy R' words.  We learned that when words contain a vowel and then an 'r' comes right after it, the 'r ' is very bossy to the vowel, and you can only hear the 'r' sound. In math this week, we focused on growing or increasing patterns.  We learned that growing patterns can be in shapes and in number sequences.  We also learned how to use an IN and OUT table to represent the pattern rule. Week 34 (June 2-7)

 The Ducklings have arrived!! This week in literacy, we started our Duck Diaries on the computers.  We read several stories that we based our diaries on, The Diary of a fly, The Diary of a Worm and The Diary of a Spider, they are written from the perspective of an insect, just as our diaries are from the perspective of a duck.  The grade two's and threes have done a wonderful job writing about what it might be like being inside the egg and then what it would be like hatching. In math this week, we began our measurement unit.  We discussed all the different ways we can measure things and where we use measurement in our daily lives.  We learned that there are standard and non-standard units, and each can be used to measure length and width.   We used our rulers and measuring tapes to measure items in nature.  We also did some Smarties math, reviewing fractions and graphing. Week 35 (June 10-14)

Happy Trickster Week!! The grade 2/3's did a wonderful job on their 'Volcano' performance, In Literacy this week, we began some research about duck facts.   The grade 2/3's used websites and on-line books to learn about duck habitat, their diet, appearance and interesting facts.  Then we began taking our notes and rewriting them into an informational paragraph about ducks. In math this week, we continued learning about measurement.  The grade 3's compared the Metric system to the Imperial system and how we can use them both. The grade 2's continued using cm to measure different lengths.  Then we began discussing perimeter, the distance around the outside of closed shapes.  We draw a minecraft self-portrait and then found the perimeter of each body part.
