Week 23 (Feb 17 - March 3)

 In Literacy this week, we learned about another genre of non-fiction writing, persuasive writing.  Together we read a story about a little boy trying to convince his mother to buy him an Iguana as a pet.  Then we learned about the structure of persuasive writing, What? Why? Why? Why? and What was that again.  We planned out our writing and then began our draft.


In math this week, we continued our study of multiplication.  This week, we worked on our giant multiplication chart in the hallway, adding the factors and products to the chart.  As well, we worked on solving word problems using multiplication.  We talked about remembering to use our success criteria when completing our work, so we can complete all of it.


In Social Studies this week, we began our travels to our next country, Tunisia.  This week we learned that Tunisia is the smallest country in Africa and that it has 3 different types of landforms.  We also used our detective skills by looking closely at different pictures from Tunisia and asking Wonder or Notice questions.  We finished our week with a sketch of 'Luke Skywalker's house' in our visual journals, as many of the Star War movies were filmed in Tunisia. 




In gym this week, we started a new unit, racket sports.  We started with 'lollipop' rackets learning how to hold the rackets, balance a bean bag or birdy on our rackets, serving the birdy and rallying with a partner.  On Friday, we had a great time playing with students from the other grade 3 class.  



Looking Ahead to Next week:

1. In Literacy, we will finish our first draft of our persuasive writing and revise it with 3-2-1 Check it!

2. In math, we will begin to look at division and how it relates to multiplication.

3. In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about Tunisia, it's culture and traditions. 

4. In Gym, we will continue our racket type skills, using tennis rackets and tennis balls.

2. Please continue to work on your READO- home reading Bingo's 

3. Spring Showcase on Wednesday, March 15th - please wear green 

4. Parent Teacher Conference - this week, no school on Friday.  Please sign up on Saturday morning.

4. Please begin collecting recycled materials for our next science unit, building.  Specifically items such as strong cardboard boxes, toilet or paper towel rolls, plastic yogurt container and tin cans.  Please gather them at home in a bag for now, once we begin our unit we will ask them to be brought to school.

 2023 Happy First Week of School! In Literacy this week, we focused on developing our writing Stamina and creating our writing goals for the year.  Together we created 2 writing goals, one to make our writing interesting and one to make it clear. In reading, we discussed the 3 ways to read, and began working on our reading STAMINA. In Math this week, we began exploring how to represent numbers in different ways.  We played a game to build the largest number using a place value chart and practised reading larger numbers to 10 000. On Thursday, we used base ten blocks to build a creation and then represent the number of blocks in standard form. Looking Ahead to Next Week: 1. Week Two ( Sept 11 -15 )

 Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the Pancake Breakfast this morning!! It was a lovely opportunity to see everyone in the EMJ community come together. In Literacy this week, we focused on building complete sentences with nouns and verbs.  We started with sticky notes with nouns and verbs and worked up to adding adjectives to make our sentences more interesting.  In reading, we had our first day of Library on Thursday and got to choose 2 books to keep for the week. Please return library books on Thursday next week! In Math this week, we continued our work on Place Value and representing numbers.  This week we worked with base ten blocks and place value charts.  We also learned about expanded form, breaking numbers apart into their values. In gym this week, we continued with different types of tag games.  These tag games help students to understand their spacial awareness in the gym and how their body can move in different ways. Week 15 (Dec 11-15)

 EMJ Leadership Spirit week Activities: Monday, December 18 - Holiday Colours - Wear Red or Green Tuesday, December 19 - Winter Wonderland - Dress in Blue or White! Wednesday, December 20 - Ugly/ Fun Holiday Sweater day Thursday, December 21 - Holiday Gear Day - festive hat, glowing necklaces, peppermint leggings! You name it!   Friday, December 22 - Pajama day!  In Literacy this week, we focused on finishing and practising our Winter Solstice sentences for our concert next Tuesday.  We continued our independent reading time with each student reading their 'practice books' at their desks while other students work in a small groups learning their targeted books and practising their targeted phonics skills.
