Week 13 ( Nov 27 - Dec 1)

Telus Spark Field Trip!!

A special thanks to parent council who funded our trip to the Science Centre this week, so we could learn more about shapes, patterns and number manipulation through movement.







 In Literacy this week, we focused on understanding and correcting sentence fragments.  First, we learned what makes a complete sentence, a group of words with a subject and a verb.  Then together we practices identifying them in sentences and then correcting sentence fragments that were missing one or the other.  Then we worked on using conjunctions, 'because', 'so' and 'but.'  These words help sentences to move forward.





In math this week, we began different rotations.  Each student was grouped according to their knowledge and understanding of shapes.  Then each day the grade 2& 3's worked through different rotations including, working through a lesson with the teacher, practice what they learned, a fun fact practice and a game station.  This week our focus was shape and geometry.  The grade 2's worked on sorting shapes based on 2 different attributes, and the grade 3's worked on recognizing regular and irregular polygons and learning the names of the different shapes.


In Social Studies, our focus this week was answering the question: Where do we live in the world?  We looked at our continent, North America and our country of Canada.  Representing where we live in each of those places, and learning what makes those places unique to the rest of the world.  We have begun to create booklets on each part.



Looking Ahead to Next Week:

1. In Literacy, we will focus on writing complete sentences about Winter Solstice.

2. In math, we will continue with learning about shapes.

3. In Social Studies, we will look at our province, our city and our communities.

Week One ( Sept 5-8th)

 2023 Happy First Week of School! In Literacy this week, we focused on developing our writing Stamina and creating our writing goals for the year.  Together we created 2 writing goals, one to make our writing interesting and one to make it clear. In reading, we discussed the 3 ways to read, and began working on our reading STAMINA. In Math this week, we began exploring how to represent numbers in different ways.  We played a game to build the largest number using a place value chart and practised reading larger numbers to 10 000. On Thursday, we used base ten blocks to build a creation and then represent the number of blocks in standard form. Looking Ahead to Next Week: 1. Week Two ( Sept 11 -15 )

 Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the Pancake Breakfast this morning!! It was a lovely opportunity to see everyone in the EMJ community come together. In Literacy this week, we focused on building complete sentences with nouns and verbs.  We started with sticky notes with nouns and verbs and worked up to adding adjectives to make our sentences more interesting.  In reading, we had our first day of Library on Thursday and got to choose 2 books to keep for the week. Please return library books on Thursday next week! In Math this week, we continued our work on Place Value and representing numbers.  This week we worked with base ten blocks and place value charts.  We also learned about expanded form, breaking numbers apart into their values. In gym this week, we continued with different types of tag games.  These tag games help students to understand their spacial awareness in the gym and how their body can move in different ways. Week 15 (Dec 11-15)

 EMJ Leadership Spirit week Activities: Monday, December 18 - Holiday Colours - Wear Red or Green Tuesday, December 19 - Winter Wonderland - Dress in Blue or White! Wednesday, December 20 - Ugly/ Fun Holiday Sweater day Thursday, December 21 - Holiday Gear Day - festive hat, glowing necklaces, peppermint leggings! You name it!   Friday, December 22 - Pajama day!  In Literacy this week, we focused on finishing and practising our Winter Solstice sentences for our concert next Tuesday.  We continued our independent reading time with each student reading their 'practice books' at their desks while other students work in a small groups learning their targeted books and practising their targeted phonics skills. In math this week, we continued with our shape unit.  In grade 2 we focused on identifying the edges, faces and vertices.  In grade 3, we focused on types of line segments, angles and sorting polygons using different sorting rules.  We also completed a math assessment on shape
