Week 8 (Oct 21-24)

Happy Pumpkin Week!!

 In Literacy this week, we wrote a paragraph about what we learned and did in In-line skating.  The students did a great job using our sentence prompts to complete their thoughts.  Later in the week, we looked at the difference between fiction and non-fiction books and compared their text features. Then we looked at our pumpkin books, deciding which ones were fiction or non-fiction. In Word work, we looked at the letter 'y' and how it can make 3 different sounds.  




In math this week, we did our pumpkin math.  We practised our estimating skills, and our skip counting skills, and began looking at graphing our data in a bar graph, all with pumpkin seeds.   We also completed a skip counting and place value assessment.  




In Science, we learned about the pumpkins.  We observed the parts of a pumpkin and the life cycle of a pumpkin. As our pumpkins began to rot, we looked to see how it was breaking down and will eventually turn into soil. In Social Studies, we looked more closely at Canada and coloured the different provinces that make up Canada.





Looking Ahead to Next Week:

1. In Literacy, we will begin looking at the text features in non-fiction books.

2. In math, we will learn about tally marks, collecting data and representing data in a bar graph.

3. In Science, we will continue to look at matter, its properties and how it changes states.

4. In Social Studies, we will begin to look at different communities around the world for the grade 3's and communities within Canada for the grade 2's.

Week 18 ( January 22-26)

In Literacy this week, we began our research on 'Dash Facts'.  First, we compared 2 different types of writing to determine what is Fiction writing and what is non-fiction writing.  Then we learned how to pull only the important words or phrases from a passage of writing to collect information on a single topic.  Then we choose either an arctic animal or an animal from India to learn more about.  We used websites and videos to collect information and facts about our animals.  We also reviewed the vowel teams that make the long e sound and the long o sound during our word work. In math this week, we focused on subtraction.  First, we created a Fraye model to review the vocabulary and symbols associated with subtraction.  Then we worked in our levelled groups to solve various subtraction problems using base ten blocks or number lines. Week 24 (March 11-15)

 Happy Skipping Week!!  In literacy this week, we began work on persuasive writing.  We learned about the difference between an opinion and being persuasive.  We also learned about the structure of a persuasive piece, the what, why, why, why and what was that again.  We also brainstormed many different ideas and examples of how we can persuade our reader.  In word work, we focused on 'Bossy R' words.  We learned that when words contain a vowel and then an 'r' comes right after it, the 'r ' is very bossy to the vowel, and you can only hear the 'r' sound. In math this week, we focused on growing or increasing patterns.  We learned that growing patterns can be in shapes and in number sequences.  We also learned how to use an IN and OUT table to represent the pattern rule. We also worked on a word problem, based on a book called 'Two of Everything', and worked with partners to decide if they would like 1000 coins or 5 coins and a magic doubling pot.
