Week 36 ( May 26 -30)

 In literacy this week, we began working on our last and final story based on the books by Laura Numeroff.  Her stories are circle stories, where the story beginngs and finishes the same.  This week, we planned and drafted our stories.  In word work this week, we focused on a new word part, prefixes!  This week we learned about the prefix, UN and how it changes the meaning of words to the reverse, oppostie and it can also mean not. In our math groups, we continued our work with fractions.  This week we learned how to compare fractions with the same denominators, the same numerators and how to place them on a number line. In Sciences, we learned about the layers of the Earth and made our own model with oreo cookies.  Ask your child what the 4 layers are.  In Social Studies, we learned about the traditional clothing, music and dance in Ukraine. Week 35 (May 20 -24)

 In Literacy this week, we shared and planned what we did over the long weekend.  Then we began to  look at how to revise our own writing for capital letters, end puncuation and missing words, using 3-2-1 Check it!  In morphology, we reviewed how the endings, -est and -er change the meanings of words.  We reviewed how to drop the y and add an i when adding est and er.  We also created a graphic of how  -er and -est can be used to add decribtion to our writing. In our math groups, we continued looking at Fractions.  This week, we looked at representing fractions, naming fractions, comparing fractions and ordering fractions.  We also did a fraction talk, explaining what fractions they obsereved within a picture. We also did some basic fact practice outside with sidewalk chalk, working with our partner to roll dice and write the facts out on the compound. Week 34 ( May 12-15)

 This week in literacy, we continued our focus on elebroating or adding details to our sentences.  These week we explored different sensory words that we can use to decribe what we see, what we hear, what we smell, what were taste and what we feel in certain situations.  We rewrote some borning sentences by adding sensory words to "paint a picture" in our readers mind.  With our word of the day, we looked at 'some, many, would and were'. Making sure we map those spellings into our brains because these words don't follow the normal patterns and can't be sounded out. In math groups this week, we began a new unit Fractions.  Students explored the whole and parts of fractions by using playdo and cutting into equal parts.  We learned that the top number in a fractions is called the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. Week 33 ( May 5 -8 )

 This week in literacy, we began working on elaborating and adding details to our sentences.  This week we focused on our 5 senses and how to use describing words to make our writing more interesting. In word work, we concluded our work with learning all the different spelling combinations.  This week we focused at silent t words. We have also started, The Word of the Day, finding a hidden irregular word that are the most common and what we need to learn in order to spell it. In our math groups, we finished looking at multiplication and division with a show what you know quiz. This week was mental health week.  On Wednesday, it was Hat's on for Mental Health.  We read a story about a Sloth learning how to slow down and show empathy towards others.  We designed our own hats with slogans and saying to help us remmeber to look after our mental health. In gym class this week, we also took care of our mental health and spent most of our gym classes outside....

Week 32 (April 28 - May 2)

 In Literacy this week, we focused on finishing off some writing projects.  Then we started changing borning sentences and making them more exciting and adding more details.  In word work, we looked at the suffix, /est/ and wrote some word sums with the new words we created with /est/.  We also reviewed silent letters, gn. In our math groups we continued looking at the relationship between multiplication and division and solving puzzles with our skip counting and grouping skills. In Science, we continued our work with Earth Systems. This week we looked at glaciers and how they shape our Earth and feed our rivers.  We also spend some time outside, in circle, sharing about our favourite insects.
