Week 33 ( May 27 - 31)

 In literacy this week, we read a book called Sometime I feel like a Fox.  This is a story about children and their totem animals, written by a Metis author.  It is about the connections between the behaviours and characteristics of animals and children.  Each student choose an animal to write about that they felt they connected to.  In word work, we talked about more prefixes. This week we focused on sub, super, mal and mis. In math this week, we continued our focus on fractions.  This week we worked on comparing fractions that contain different wholes, the same denominators and same numerators.   In Science this week, we continued learning about fossils and got to meet an expert in our school who has volunteered on several digs throughout the province and brought us some fossil samples to look at in the library.  In Social Studies we, continued looking at Peru.  This week we focused on their economy and Peruvian culture.  On Frida...

Week 32 ( May 21-24)

In Literacy this week, we continued to write complete and descriptive sentences about Meteghan, an Acadian community.  This week, we researched 3 interesting facts about Meteghan culture.  The grade 2/3's are doing a fantastic job remembering to add capital letters and periods to their sentences.  In word work, we learned about dropping the e and changing the y to 'i' in words when adding suffixes such as ed, 'es', 'est', and 'ing'.   In math this week, we continued with fractions.  We worked, folding strips of paper and labelling them using the correct fraction representation.  We also had a couple fraction talks, discussing how and what fractions we see in different pattern blocks. In Science and Social Studies this week, we continued to learn about Peru and Earth Systems.  The grade 2/3's learned about the importance of Llamas and Alpacas in Peru.  In science, we learned about how the Earth changes under the surface and how scientists can ...

Week 31 ( May 13 -16)

 In Literacy this week, our writing topic was a small Acadian town of Meteghan.  We used our skills on writing questions and similes to write about the landforms of Meteghan and the Earth's changes.  In word work, we learned why you need to double the consent in words when adding -ed and -ing.   In math this week, we began learning about fractions.  This week we reviewed that fractions are equal parts of a whole, what the denominator and numerator are and how to read and say fractions.  In Science and Social Studies, we continued to look and how the Earth's Surface changes.  We talked about fast changes such as volcanos, land slides and floods.  We also talked about human impact and what things humans are doing to drastically change the Earth's surface.  In Social Studies, we learned about the language in Peru and the 4 landforms that make up the country of Peru. Week 30 (May 6- 10)

 In Literacy this week, we worked on writing good questions.  We compared questions to complete sentences and then wrote questions about interesting science pictures. On Thursday, we worked on fixing incorrect sentences with the correct punctuation and capital letters.  In word work, we continued looking at prefixes, with a focus on, 'pre, re and dis'.   In math this week, the grade 2's began looking at the passage of time on a calendar.  The grade 3's continued with division, comparing multiplication to division, looking at arrays and solving word problems using multiplication and division. In Science this week, we continued to learn about erosion through various experiments.  We also talked about different bodies of water on the Earth and how it contributes to our daily life.  We also spent some time outside, using our senses to journal what we see, think and wonder about the outdoors.  This led to a great discussion about the natural grass...

 In Literacy this week, we focused on creating and varying sentences beginnings.  We focused on making complete sentences using subordinating conjunctions, such as, before, after, if, while and although.  In word work, we began looking at words can change their meanings when a prefix or suffix is added.  This week we learned about less, ful and un . In math, the grade 2's created a board game using their addition and subtraction skills.  The grade 3's began learning about Division.  This week, we learned that division is sharing, grouping, repeated subtraction, and it is the inverse operation of multiplication. In Science this week, we began looking at Earth Sciences.  We began discussing how the Earth was formed and what things inhabit the surface of the Earth, such as, soil, water, plants, mountains, and rocks.  We also discussed how the Earth can change over times, such as glaciers moving and erosion.
