Week 37 (June 2 -6)

Ducks, Ducks, Ducks!!

Welcome to our 8 ducklings that have joined the grade 2/3 team this week.  We watched them hatch from their eggs and begin growing into ducklings. Much of our learning this week and next week, will be connected to our ducklings.



In literacy this week, we started our Duck Diaries.  Each day we will write an entry in our journal about the significant events that have happened with our ducklings.  So far we have written about being inside of the egg, hatching and being held.  We worked on adding in our sensory words and correctly forming sentences.  


In our math groups, we began looking a measurement.  First, we worked with non-standard units and measures the length on objects around our classrooms.  Then we looked at standard units, mm, cm, m and km.  We first we estimated the lengths and then we measured with a ruler.






In Science, we began looking at Living systems by looking at the duck's lifecycle.




In gym class, we had a wonderful time with track and field relay races.  We learned how to pass the batons and jump over hurdels.

Week 20 (Jan 27-30)

 In literacy this week, we continued working on our small-moment story.  We learned about adding sound effects, 'showing, not telling', using transition words and writing an effective ending.  In word work, we continued looking at vowel teams, this week we looked at the two different sounds oo make in words. In math this week, we continued with our different math groups.  On Monday, we will regroup our math groups again into grade groups.  This will allow the grade three's to continue with multiplication and division and the grade two's to focus on addition and subtraction skills. In Science this week, we continued exploring sound energy and forces.  The grade 2's learned how sound behaved and experimented with sound travelling through solids.  We also went outside to complete some sound mapping and observe the sounds we hear in nature and how we can tell what direction they are coming from. Week 34 (June 2-7)

 The Ducklings have arrived!! This week in literacy, we started our Duck Diaries on the computers.  We read several stories that we based our diaries on, The Diary of a fly, The Diary of a Worm and The Diary of a Spider, they are written from the perspective of an insect, just as our diaries are from the perspective of a duck.  The grade two's and threes have done a wonderful job writing about what it might be like being inside the egg and then what it would be like hatching. In math this week, we began our measurement unit.  We discussed all the different ways we can measure things and where we use measurement in our daily lives.  We learned that there are standard and non-standard units, and each can be used to measure length and width.   We used our rulers and measuring tapes to measure items in nature.  We also did some Smarties math, reviewing fractions and graphing.
